“New Friend” Trees or “Non-Native”

I had a question for the great Thomas Packenham at the Garden and Landscape Designers’ Association conference today…

“For Thomas; Thank you for taking in our rescue Monkey Puzzle tree to plant in your Monkey Puzzle garden. None of the public parks wanted to plant this gift from our Easy Treesie project as it wasn’t a native. How can we encourage the Native-Only Zealots to recognise the benefits of diversity?”

This was his response; names he likes; “Introduced species”, “Guest Species” “New Friend Tree species”; thank you Thomas and yes, “Non-native” does indeed remind us too of a whole “non-white” vocabulary…racism does come to mind…
