Shankill Tree Planting Update!

We sent in this story by invitation of the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Co. Council ezine publishers in the lead up to the recent World Environment Day…in case you don’t receive this publication, here it is;

Crann – Trees for Ireland representative on the DLR Environment and Climate Change SPC, Diarmuid McAree, presented a TEDx Talk this month on the Shankill ‘ Trees for All’

project.

The TEDxCrannTreesforIreland event was hosted to coincide with the 51st International Earth Day in preparation for the launch on World Environment Day, June 5th 2021 of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, 5th anniversary of the signing of the Paris Agreement. The conference showcased ideas worth spreading from Irish tree planting and tree-growing experts and policymakers, educators and activists for a restored environment. Attendees heard recent success stories and challenges as the conference participants joined with climate action leaders around the world in tackling the biggest challenge of our age. 6 TEDx Circle events, small group conversations open to the public have been held in association with this conference.

You can watch Diarmuid’s TED talk and others from the conference on the TED.com website, where he discusses the inspiring work done with Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, Shankill Tidy Towns and its community and the Easy Treesie Project which is working with Crann, Trees for Ireland to plant 1M trees with Ireland’s 1M school children and their communities by 2023.  June 2021 starts the decade of restoration with the world trillion tree campaign . This campaign aims to reduce global heating by 1 degree while other climate solutions are found. This project is being promoted in Ireland by Orla Farrell who organised the TEDx conference with a young international team including Crann Environmental Intern, Opeyemi Adetifa from TU Dublin. You can watch Diarmuid’s talk here where he outlines his vision of “Trees for All” around the country – a vision achieved in Shankill and being copied in towns and villages around the country.

Diarmuid gave an extended talk about this project as part of National Biodiversity Week in association with the Irish Environmental Network which will be available shortly.

The TEDxCrannTreesforIreland conference was managed by Blackrock-based Aileen O Meara’s firm, the Rathdown Media Institute and co-sponsored by Patagonia Dublin, the Tree Council of Ireland and Rethink Ireland. You can find more information about the work of Easy Treesie and Crann, Trees for Ireland – who always welcome new members – at their websites here; www.easytreesie.com and www.crann.ie.
