See our Parade of Easy Treesie – Crann Project Trees, part of the UNEP-backed world trillion tree project
Join us on Saturday next 21st August to celebrate the Heritage Trees of Greenore, County Louth. We’ll meet up on the Prom beside the Scenic Carlingford Ferry port and set off for a stroll around the village admiring the trees that everyone always remember when they first visit Greenore! We’ll stop to take a picture at our Tree No. 170,000, planted on World Environment Day with the members of Greenore Tidy Towns as a climate action to help bring down global temperatures by 1 degree while we get busy decarbonising. We are Planting-for-the-Planet with the Easy Treesie – Crann Project who are working with the support of the Tree Council of Ireland, Rethink Ireland and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine Releafing our Island.
Meet at the public car park Mary McAleese monument just beside Carlingford Ferry Port at 11 a.m. Saturday 21st August; we’ll be admiring the iconic pine trees of Greenore with the guidance of local expert Don Brasil who has planted many many trees in Greenore and surrounds during his long career. We’ll see how the Prom Pines are doing, planted during Biodiversity Week 2019 and World Environment Day 2021 by the Tidy Towns and taking a tour of other village trees, new and old. Involvement of the local community;
Yes indeed; our national project is currently based in Greenore, Co. Louth jointly with Dublin. We have run a variety of planting parties including one such distanced event on National Tree Day 2020 when we planted the project’s 100,001st tree. We linked with many local schools including Rampark (apple tree planting building on previous work) and Bush Post Primary School (local Christmas tree initiative) as well as Carlingford, Grange and Omeath volun-tree helpers in a National Tree Week collaboration in March 2021 when we ran an online “Film Friday” during our week of planting over 100k saplings throughout Ireland with sponsors Coillte and Trees on the Land . We ran an online Culture Night event for over 100 participants, an international TEDxCrannTreesforIreland conference sold-out at 100 participants also and a national Biodiversity Week series of virtual events all based in Greenore.
We featured on national TV (Nationwide) and print media (Independent, Star) as well as on many local newspaper reports and radio. We planted a tree with the President of the GAA in advance of our 45,000-tree planting initiative next season. We ran a “Film Friday” virtually in collaboration with the Tree Council aimed at schools and featuring some of our more popular films. We publish a six-monthly “Tree-Mail” report in “Crann, Ireland’s Tree Magazine” which will be widely distributed during Heritage Week. As an Awardee of Rethink Ireland we have been building our social media presence with assistance from their accelerator programme. We have liaised with Trocaire in an upcoming campaign. We received a film award from NUI Galway as part of their latest Reel Life Science Film competition. We engaged with two hospitals in tree-related initiatives this year.
