Gerhardt Gallagher R.I.P.; An Appreciation

It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss we learn of the passing of dear Gerhardt. He was a most wonderful and generous support to our children’s tree planting project. We’ll be planting a Beechwood grove in his honour. We extend our sincere condolences to the family.

Not only as former RDS forester of the year and distinguished scientific researcher was he always able to answer any of our questions. He most generously produced a land use paper for us in answer to our student Intern’s question to him, finding space for a billion trees in Ireland. Then he managed to deliver the paper while recording video and audio separately on computer and phone himself from home (very tricky) for our TEDxCrannTreesforIreland conference, as due to Covid-19 restrictions we could not send a camera operator and had to run the event virtually. Then finally, he illustrated the talk most beautifully with his own magnificent artworks.

We will greatly miss his company on our various road trips & tree safaris around the country as well as missing his fearless advocacy for nature and his campaigning spirit. Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann.— Orla Farrell and all at the Easy Treesie – Crann Project
