We consider it important in our Easy Treesie project to include a small number of non-native species, common naturalised trees in the main, since our list of natives is 28 species only (two of these, elm and ash are not plantable due to disease status and certain others may not be suitable due to conditions). Our list is so small due to our island status and for other reasons. We find that this practice this improves the resilience of our woodlands given our changing weather patterns; increased drought and rainfall has taken its toll on certain native saplings yet trees which were introduced perhaps 1,000 years ago to Ireland yet are not on the natives list can thrive in the new conditions – e.g. lime, sycamore, horse chestnut, maple, beech and fruit trees.
